We look forward to welcoming community activists and volunteers from throughout Co. Wexford who will attend Wexford Local Development’s Community Conference on Saturday next, the 8th of April. The event will take place in the Riverbank House Hotel in Wexford town and speakers include Catherine Byrne TD, Minister of State for Communities and the National Drugs Strategy, Fred Karlsson – founder of DoneDeal and social researcher Brian Harvey.

The conference will start at 9.30am, concluding with a networking lunch for attendees at 1.30pm.

The theme of this year’s event will be on community participation. Delegates will get a chance to discuss the benefits of community involvement, the positive impacts of participation in local communities and local development within Ireland today.

Wexford Local Development sees the vital impact that local groups are having on a daily basis by building social cohesion, developing pride and confidence in their communities and improving opportunities for local people. Since the new LEADER programme commenced last Autumn, 118 community projects have submitted expressions of interest for funding to enhance youth, arts, cultural facilities and walking trails around Co. Wexford, demonstrating the huge desire for local people to play a central role in developing their own communities.

Over 300 community groups currently work with WLD through a range of supports and services, including TUS, the Rural Social Scheme, the WARM project and the Social Inclusion programme (SICAP). These communities work in tandem with WLD in making a difference together.
